There are five categories of stresses: Violence, Unnatural, Helplessness, Isolation, and Self. In game, you will be exposed to events that can trigger one of these stresses. Examples can be found in upload:stresses.pdf

As a result of Stress, you can accumulate Notches in each of these five meters. Notches come in two types, Hardened and Failed. When exposed to a stress, determine the rank of the Stress. If it is less than or equal to the number of Hardened Notches of that type you have accumulated, you are immune to the Stress. Otherwise, make a Resolve + Composure check with a penalty equal to the difference between your current number of Hardened Notches of that type and the rank of the stress check. If you succeed, you retain your cool and gain another Hardened Notch. If you fail, you suffer from panic, paralysis, or frenzy and gain a Failed Notch.

Ten Hardened Notches of a given type makes you completely immune to stress checks of that sort, and also turns you into something of a sociopath. Five Failed Notches makes you go crazy.

You can start play with up to three Hardened Notches at the cost of an equal number of Failed Notches, in whatever categories you choose (need not be the same).

For more details on the effects of Notch accumulation, see Unknown Armies, 2nd Edition, p. 64-71.
