Sola Al-Khwarizmi joined the House army after she turned nineteen, and spent the next decade as a combat grunt occasionally fighting in various minor and strategically irrelevant battles in the Succession Wars. Unfortunately, she was still in the army when the fortunes of the House Al-Malik took a particularly dire turn, and as a long-service vet she was picked for chemical augmentation as a chem trooper. She didn't die from the treatments, but by the time she got out the war was over and there was a new Emperor. In the peace that followed, Al-Malik disbanded most of its armies, eliminating the chem trooper brigades as too expensive to maintain (due to medical costs) for garrison duty.

So, after a decade of service, Sola found herself on the streets, with nothing to show for her service but scars from blaster burns, chronic illness arising from metabolic damage, and an addiction to combat drugs. She tried to build herself a new life, anyway, finding a husband and having a child. This, too, fell apart when her child was born, and found to be severely deformed due to the teratogens still floating around her system. Since her son was a freak because of the far-future equivalent of thalidomide, rather than a mutant, the Church ruled that the baby didn't have to be burned at the stake as a mutant horror. But her husband left her, anyway.

Currently, she works as a duenna for the young girls of the local noble house. Her job is to a) be a bodyguard, and b) be old, horrible and ugly, so that the girls look prettier. It pays (some of) the bills.

She is on good terms with her three younger cousins, Nadia, Agios, and Gris.
